Technical Training

This page will provide you with information about technical diving courses and tec guided dives, logistics, gases and equipment that Deep Blue offers. We are a proven DSAT Tec Rec and PADI 5 Star Gold Palm IDC instructor training facility providing the highest level of education. We operate a dive shop located in Utila town and a resort a short boat ride out of town. The Tec team here at deep Blue divers would be glad to answer any questions you have regarding Tec diving in the Caribbean or general dive / travel questions for Central America. You can contact us at CourseDirector_Tec@DeepBlueUtila.com

General Information
Technical diving is the challenging arena of deep diving, usually below the recreational limit of 40 meters, using multiple gases for extending bottom times and accelerating decompression schedules. The island of Utila is an ideal environment for both the experienced diver and those wishing to become technical divers.

The island is surrounded by fringing reef and deep walls as we are situated on the edge of the continental shelf. We have numerous Sea Mounts ranging from 10m/33’ to 60m/200’ and deeper that are outside the range of recreational divers.

The water temperatures are warm usually ranging between26-30C / 80-90F with great visibility and there are usually no significant currents on most of the dive sites.

Tec Diving Utila provides instruction using DSAT Tec Rec training programs which can be broken down into various steps accommodating different experience levels and time frames. Our educational training is conducted in small, personal groups with the emphasis on quality of training and is undertaken using the latest training philosophy, techniques and materials. For those already certified we provide equipment rental, gases and experienced guides to provide any additional support required.

Advice on the necessary study tools and books for the various programs can be found by contacting us at CourseDirector_Tec@DeepBlueUtila.com as a degree of study prior to commencing the course should be completed. Technical diving is comparatively complex and training requirements are extensive.

Technical diving equipment is available for rental at competitive prices but it is recommended that the diver brings their own gear. A list of equipment required can be found in the at the bottom of the page with prices for rental.

Course Information and Prerequisites

Technical Introductory Dives
Never used doubles before? By taking a technical introductory dive you can experience what it feels like to dive with twin tanks. The introductory dive prepares you with the necessary background information on the standard equipment configuration along with its use and a series of familiarization exercises. Following completion of the exercises students are taken on a tour. The introductory dive is dive number one from the DSAT Tec Rec course and may be credited toward DSAT Tec Level 1 at the instructors discretion.

Prerequisites:

  1. Certified as PADI Advanced Open Water diver or equivalent.
  2. Minimum age: 18 years.
  3. A minimum of 10 logged dives.
Tec Diver Level One
Tec diver level 1 introduces all of the decompression theory and equipment, equal to decompression theory and advanced Nitrox, that is used during the Tec Deep Diver course. This involves seven training dives and the course schedule is usually five days. The aim of Level 1 is to train the diver in the techniques and disciplines of extended range decompression diving using Air and Nitrox up to 60% and is also the first half of the Tec Deep Diver program.

The certification gives the diver the knowledge and skills to:

  • make gas switch extended no-stop dives to 40 meters / 130' using air and and enriched air with up to 60% oxygen, using technical diving equipment and procedures
  • master the motor skills required for technical diving
  • understand and acknowledge the hazards and risks involved with technical diving
  • train the diver to prepare and respond to foreseeable emergencies that may occur in this type of diving
  • master skills and knowledge for completing the entire Tec Deep Diver course

Prerequisites:

  1. Certified as PADI Advanced Open Water diver or equivalent.
  2. Minimum age: 18 years.
  3. Certified as PADI Enriched Air diver or equivalent with 10 logged dives using enriched air.
  4. Certified as PADI Deep diver or equivalent with six logged dives deeper than 30m/100' and 12 dives deeper than 18m/60'.
  5. Have a minimum of 50 logged dives.
Tec Deep Diver Level 2
Tec Deep Diver Level 2 is the continuation of Level 1 and consists of five more training dives of which four are actual decompression dives using Air, Nitrox and up to 100% Oxygen to accelerate decompression. The maximum depth achieved on the course is 50m / 165' . The Tec Deep diver schedule for Level 2 is five days and can be completed after Level 1 (if all the prerequisites are met).

Upon certification the Tec Level 2 course gives the diver the knowledge and skills to;

  • make gas switch, extended no stop dives, decompression dives and accelerated decompression dives using air, enriched air and 100% oxygen, up to 165ft/50 meters
  • the motor skills required for technical diving
  • understand the hazards and risks with this type of technical diving
  • be prepared for and respond to reasonably foreseeable emergencies that may occur in this type of technical diving
  • master the foundational skills for further training in technical diving such as Trimix

Prerequisites:

  1. Certified as PADI Advanced Open Water diver or equivalent.
  2. Certified as PADI Rescue diver or equivalent.
  3. Minimum age: 18 years.
  4. Certified as a PADI Enriched Air diver or equivalent with 20 logged dives using enriched air.
  5. Certified as a PADI Deep diver or equivalent with 15 logged dives deeper than 30m/100' and 25 dives deeper than 18m/60'.
  6. Have a minimum of 100 logged dives.
DSAT Gas Blender Nitrox /Trimix
The DSAT Gas Blender course isn't just for the technical diver but can be completed by recreational divers too. The DSAT Gas Blender course will train you as a qualified gas blender, allowing you to provide gas mixes to appropriately qualified consumers. Both Nitrox and Trimix blending courses are available.

Typically the Nitrox blender takes one and a half days to complete and consists of blending system familiarization, oxygen use and its potential problems. The practical side covers oxygen cleaning of equipment & blending five Nitrox blends using the partial pressure blending method. Trimix is an extra half day after the Nitrox blender course & includes one Trimix blend using all the procedures learned in the Nitrox blender course.

DSAT Gas Blender Instructor
The Gas Blender Instructor course is intended to help you teach others to blend gas mixtures. The DSAT Gas Blender Instructor course is one of the most informative and comprehensive programs available, incorporating instructional philosophies and course goals that directly address the demanding nature of gas blending.

What can you do as a DSAT Gas Blender Instructor?

  • teach the Gas Blender course

Prerequisites:

  1. Certified as PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor or higher.
  2. Certified as PADI Enriched Air Instructor.

Guided Technical Dives
Technical dives using our experienced guides are also available along with the option to rent the latest equipment from Dive Rite. We can arrange blends, tours, dive planning and packages.

Rebreathers
Rebreathers can be accommodated in terms of gases & O2 fills.
